PARIS – August 25, 2008: With cars like the R8 Gordini, 5 GT Turbo and Clio Williams, the Renault range has always featured affordable sporty cars based on mainstream production models. Twingo Renault Sport is latest car to enjoy that distinction.

Twingo Renault Sport is the result of a double challenge which sought to deliver a car with genuine sporty credentials at an affordable price. It is a Renault Sport car through and through, and features the same ingredients that have helped forged the success of its larger siblings, Clio and Mégane Renault Sport. These include specific styling, coupled with a chassis, engine and braking system engineered for a high standard of efficiency and performance that is also suited to everyday use.

Twingo Renault Sport’s release stems from a desire to facilitate access to the Renault Sport experience. Twingo Renault Sport’s compact proportions and sharp styling echo the Twingo Concept show car which was a star of the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The newcomer’s pedigree and sporty looks are highlighted by its bumpers, wider front and rear wings, sculpted side skirts and an aerodynamic spoiler. Inside, the cabin has been tailored for focused sports driving, with Renault Sport front seats for enhanced lateral support, plus specific aluminium pedals, a leather steering wheel and revcounter. From launch, it will be possible to customise the car to owners’ individual tastes thanks to a range of exterior and interior Renault Sport detailing accessories, as well as a multimedia connection point.

As suggested by its fully disconnectable ESP, which comes as standard, Twingo Renault Sport delivers genuine sports enjoyment but is also suited to everyday use. Its finely balanced handling ensures that it is easy to assimilate and fun to drive, while ensuring a particularly high standard of safety. As is the case with Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, two types of chassis (‘Sport’ and ‘Cup’) are available. Both benefit from wider front and rear tracks, while the main components of its powerful, durable braking system are sourced from higher segment models. Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine developed by Renault Sport Technologies. This powerplant pumps out 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm, with 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The unit’s punchy character is reinforced by a characteristic engine note which has been the focus of specific development. The four-into-one exhaust is a technological feat which strikes a perfect balance between acoustics, performance and low emissions.

Twingo Renault Sport has plenty in its favour to win over a new, young clientele. To support these customers buying their first hot hatch, Renault Sport is offering a Renault Sport Experience driving tuition course in certain countries. This service is unprecedented in the small car segment and offers instruction on safe driving techniques. The Renault Sport Experience comes in addition to the Enthusiast Days which permit customers to drive their car in the safe environment of a circuit in the presence of instructors and service staff.

MOTOR SPORT IN ITS GENES

Renault has always been a major player in the world of motor sport and its record reveals a long list of successes in many legendary races and competitions. From the R8 Gordini and Clio Williams to the 5 GT Turbo, the Renault range has always featured sports versions of mainstream production models. The latest car to enjoy this distinction is Twingo Renault Sport.

Renault’s motor sport heritage…
Ever since its creation in 1898, Renault has been a major player in the world of motor sport. It won the Paris-Madrid road race as early as 1903, has notched up many memorable successes in rallying and endurance racing (1978 Le Mans 24 Hours) and has held several land speed records. It has also marked history with such bold innovations as the introduction of Formula 1′s first turbocharged engine in 1977. Three decades on, Renault secured back-to-back FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ titles in 2005 and 2006. This commitment, which is anchored in Renault’s DNA, is not simply founded on pumping up power outputs. “We have the privilege of addressing a demanding, connoisseur clientele, and many of our competitors compete actively,” points out Rémi Deconinck, the General Manager of Renault Sport Technologies. Buyers of Renault Sport vehicles are genuine specialists and are looking for a car that mirrors their personality. These exceptional cars are derived from the Clio, Mégane and now Twingo ranges, but have been through the expert hands of Renault Sport specialists who are accustomed to exacting world of competition.

Is this the surefire hit Renault has been looking for? Sales of the new Twingo haven’t matched the French maker’s initial expectations – but top brass say this is the model to change its fortunes.

The latest addition to the Twingo line-up boasts a hot engine and sporty chassis. The all-new 133bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder powerplant and bespoke suspension might not make the Renaultsport 133 sound as impressive as the likes of its high-performance Mégane R26-R big brother. Yet they are enough to launch the little Renault from 0-62mph in a mere 8.7 seconds. It will carry on until 125mph, too – and this brings it close to the mighty new Abarth 500 Esseesse.

The bulbous arches, rear spoiler and colour-coded body detailing add to the Twingo’s aggressive appearance, and reflect its motorsport heritage. However, this car isn’t all about zippy straight-line speed – the manufacturer has also fettled the handling to ensure that it has all the character of a classic French hot hatch. All Renaultsport models feature a specially dropped ride height, 16-inch alloy wheels with low-profile rubber, plus stiffer springs and dampers. The track has been widened by 60mm at the front and 59mm at the rear, which provides extra stability through tight bends.

Our car was also fitted with the optional Cup package, which sees further changes to the chassis. This sportier variant will set enthusiasts back an additional £650, and brings a 4mm lower ride height plus dampers and springs stiffened by another 10 per cent. There are eye-catching 17-inch anthracite alloy wheels, too. All of these additions make for a more extreme driving experience than the standard chassis.

Open the driver’s door and you are greeted by a set of snug racing seats and an abundance of quirky interior details. These include a small rev counter mounted behind the steering wheel and a digital speedometer which is situated in the centre of the dash. Plus, there is a set of aluminium pedals wearing funky pause, stop and play logos – these look great. Slot the bright red key into the ignition, twist it, and the motor warbles into life. It sounds, and feels, like a much larger engine. The exhaust system emits a fabulous bassy thrum at low revs, and this rises to a shriek at the top end to accompany the constant whine of the two camshafts.

The Twingo isn’t short on guts, either. Peak torque of 160Nm is reached at 4,400rpm and peak power is unleashed at 6,750rpm. The car is nippy and willing at the bottom end of the range, but the surge of power simply keeps on coming until the green ‘change up’ light flashes.

The steering is light and the turn-in is sharp, which compliments the agile feel of the car. Unfortunately, the Twingo’s otherwise positive driving experience is slightly let down by a mild delay in early throttle response.

Other grumbles include those rather cheap-looking, mock-grille plastic surrounds for the driving lamps, power-steering that sometimes feels a little heavy during low-speed manoeuvres, and minimal luggage space in the boot.

However, if you are looking for hot hatchback performance on a budget, not much can match the Twingo for real-world muscle which you can use every day. The 133 Cup doesn’t offer bags of interior space or exude quality, but it provides a great first foot on the Renaultsport performance car ladder – and most importantly, it will put a big smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel.

Do you find that the Renault Twingo has a smiling face? That the VW Beetle looks startled? The Trabant is sad? And a BMW looks angry? In a study, scientists say that if we see a mellow, macho or other expression on the front end of a car, it is because we are hard-wired to scan human faces for vital information.

Humans, like other animals, have evolved the ability to size someone up in the briefest of glances, they say. Seeing a face for just a 10th of a second is enough to figure out if that person is hostile or helpful, a stranger or kin a prehistoric survival mechanism that can make the difference between life and death.

To see if this reflex extends to automobiles, a team of researchers led by Karl Grammer, of the University of Vienna, asked 40 young adults half of them women and half men to rate the front ends of 38 recent-model cars, all the same colour.

The researchers first classified the ”expressions” on the cars using a computerised system of standardised measures for human faces that indicate degrees of masculinity or femininity, and different emotions, based on the size and position of facial features.

Then they asked participants to rate each car’s ”face” for 19 criteria: Is the ”face” more like a child or an adult? More friendly or hostile? More male or female? Is it arrogant? Happy? Afraid? Aggressive?

Respondents were also simply asked if the car’s front end looked like a face and, if so, whether it was more human or animal. Finally, they picked the vehicles they liked.

More than a third said that 90 per cent of the cars reminded them of a face, and all of the participants indicated headlights for the ”eyes” and a radiator grill for the ”mouth”.

Their ranking of emotions matched the ones generated by computers in most cases, according to the experiment, reported this week in the journal Human Nature, published by Germany’s Springer group.

As for preferences, both men and women showed a clear liking for cars they described as mature, dominating, masculine, arrogant and angry characteristics the researchers bundled together under the heading ”power”.

These cars had a low-slung bonnet and wide front, associated with the square jaw and prominent chin of stereotyped masculinity. Topping the list of ”power” cars were top-of-the-line BMWs and the Chrysler 300C.

At the submissive, friendly and childlike end of the spectrum were Nissan’s new Micra, Volkswagen’s new Beetle and the Kia Picanto.

The next step could be to quantify how our perception of car ”faces” affects our auto purchases and driving behaviour. This could offer potential benefits for marketeers but also for road safety, the researchers say.

”Do we feel that driving a car that looks arrogant and dominant might be of benefit in the daily ‘battles’ on the road?” they ask.

”Does one change lanes and give way sooner when an ‘aggressive’ car appears in the rear-view mirror?” AFP

The Twingo was designed in 1993 by the then chief designer of Renault, Patrick le Quement. It is claimed that the inspiration for the design shape came from the Polish Beskid car, also using the leftovers of the Renault 5. At the time of release the features of the Twingo where unique, such features as a centrally mounted instrument panel, sliding rear seats and boot parcel shelf. These features were risky and were never seen before. The Twingo was launched in 1993 and was an instant success, at the unveiling there were 2240 reservations signed.

The Twingo has gone through three restyling, in 1998, 2000, and 2004, since it’s inception. The car was produced mainly in France initially, with Uruguay and Colombia helping with production from 1999 to 2002.

The Second generation Twingo was released in 2007, with the production of a right-hand drive car for the first time.
